...is not one of hitting rock bottom or ending up in a hospital somewhere on my death bed. It is a story of impatience. It is a story of becoming fed up with where I was and making the choice to change.
My career as a singer in NYC was going nowhere due to recurring vocal issues. I was always “trying to lose just 5 more pounds” (because I was always 'too big' in my own head). Exhausted. Unfit. Flirting with a problem with alcohol. In and out of unsteady unfulfilling relationships.
I was living the young performer's lifestyle!
When my wake up call came – as it does for many – it was a health scare. A pre-cancerous lesion popped up out of nowhere, due to unhealthy choices. For once, it was my voice and my LIFE on the line. It was sheer luck that it was caught in time.
But I knew something had to change. I hated not knowing what was going on in my body. I hated feeling so disconnected from it when I was on stage and off. (<------That was DEFINITELY affecting my performance!)
Why had it betrayed me like this? What had I done to deserve this?
Here's the thing though...
MY BODY hadn't done this to ME... I had done this to MY BODY!
Not only that, but as a performer, my voice is PART OF my body. It’s not something amorphous talent machine that lives in my neck. It’s something that needs nurturing and care and HEALTH! Exercise, sleep, and the kinds of nutrition I was putting in were just as important as the warm ups I regularly did.
So, while finishing my Master’s program at NYU in Vocal Pedagogy and Vocal Performance, I started seeing my own health coach. She urged me to continue my education through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and I’m eternally grateful to her for that.
As a Performer, Teacher, and Health/Life Coach for performers, I believe that we are best able to perform, either on stage or elsewhere in our lives, when we take care of our bodies to the best of our ability. As performers, this also means a focus on SUSTAINABLE singing! Not just shooting to the top no matter what the cost!
And this isn’t just true for performers. This is true of EVERYBODY! Whether you’re a lawyer, doctor, artist, teacher, basket-weaver… You depend on your body to keep you going throughout your day.
That marriage of health, lifestyle, AND vocal technique?
THAT is what I bring to every student in my studio.
Improving your body means being able to COMMUNICATE with your body. Not just give instruction and expect results, but to RECEIVE information as well.
I was able to end the war with my body and my VOICE because I started TALKING to it instead of FIGHTING with it.
